National Research Infrastructure
on Solar Energy Concentration

Mission

Standing for Évora Pole of INIESC – National Research Infrastructure on Solar Energy Concentration, a distributed RI coordinated by UEvora (through SOL4R), INIESC Évora mission is to assure the physical, technical and logistical infrastructure for applied research, innovation, capacitation and industrial services aiming at the development of technological solutions for the use of solar energy as a primary energy source, in support of the Energy Transition of different economic sectors.

In a Nutshell

Part of the portuguese Roadmap of Research Infrastructures of Strategic Interest, INIESC Évora is part of the portuguese representation in the ESFRI European Research Infrastructure Consortium ERIC EU-SOLARIS and is an adhering infrastructure to the European partnership Water4All.
With a total of 11.7 ha, INIESC Évora gathers infrastructural assets on a wide range of solar irradiation conversion technologies and systems, enabling innovative approaches to:

  • solar concentrator design;
  • thermal and electrochemical energy storage;
  • territorial integration of solar energy systems;
  • solar thermochemistry for fuels and commodities;
  • solar desalination and water treatment;
  • solar irrigation systems;
  • solar process heat,

through prototype experimental validation, pilot system demonstration or product development activities with academia, research and industrial partners.

Providing access not only to research partners but also to the wider community, INIESC Évora promotes capacitation, dissemination and technology transfer activities aimed at students, policy makers, civil society and general public, fostering the visibility and promoting the role of solar driven technologies in the Energy Transition.
INIESC Évora assets and activities are supported by a Engineering, Procurement and Maintenance (PEM) team ensuring its operation, maintenance and logistic coherence, following safety, FAIR data and IP protection principles in line with state-of-the-art procedures.

Vision

Gathering infrastructural assets stemming from applied research, innovation, dissemination and technology transfer activities, INIESC Évora assures their coherent integration as parts of a wider system.
Following the use of solar energy conversion technologies after “photon to electron” (PV based) or “photon to molecule” (thermal based) approaches to the production of different final energy vectors – electricity, heat, fuels, water – not neglecting the use of thermal and electrochemical energy storage technologies, INIESC Évora vision stands for the demonstration of a solar based energy system for the Energy Transition:

  • fully renewable;
  • fully dispatchable;
  • fully flexible in the interconversion of final energy vectors.

Upon this vision, INIESC Évora supports and enables:

  • the development of applied research covering the TRL range 4-7;
  • and fosters innovation by means of promoting the exploitation of research results along the TRL range 8-9,

assuring the due infrastructural integration of different prototypes and pilot systems in a coherent system enabling the exploitation of technology interfaces and the testing and demonstration of their integration at a wider scale.
